Kuala Lumpur, 28 November 2017 --( ASIA TODAY )-- The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of Malaysia hosted the 14th Annual Dialysis Meeting 2017 (ADM 2017) from 25 November to 26 November 2017 at the Istana Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The theme for this year is ‘Setting the Right Direction’ Holistic Approach of Management for end stage renal disease (ESRD) in Malaysia.

The two-day meeting is a patient-centred approach to dialysis care that attracted over 600 individuals who were provided with demonstrable personal, clinical and organizational benefits through 28 innovative sessions led by notable experts, exciting key note speeches, informative issues and opportunities to network with hundreds of professionals.

Speaking during the opening launch, Dr. Thiruventhiran Thilaganathan, the Chairperson of the 14th ADM Organising Committee mentioned that “As an organization, we are committed to building partnerships and support for our patients. This year’s meeting is an opportunity for us to take responsibility to embrace the patient-centred approach and to lead a better quality of life for ESRD patients in Malaysia”.

In conjunction with the meeting, NKF launched the very first recipe book called ‘Food Your Kidneys Love’ by students of Berjaya University College of Hospitality (BERJAYA UCH). The recipe book was a result of the partnership between NKF and BERJAYA UCH in the first healthy cook-off competition. The competition required Year 2 culinary arts students to submit their kidney-friendly recipes that are suitable for the community at large with the result that the top five students were selected. The winner of the competition, Ang Wei Ming, got the cover spot on NKF’s first recipe book.

With 18 pages of resource information and five recipes, copies of the book were distributed first-hand to the delegates during the meeting. The book is also available for purchase at RM5.00 on the NKF’s website.

Additionally, NKF shared the good news of having been awarded the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) Accreditation for its Post Basic Haemodialysis (PBHD) Nursing Programme. The programme, which was incepted at NKF’s Training Centre since 2005 is a six-month programme designed for registered nurses with minimum two (2) years clinical working experience and three (3) months’ experience in haemodialysis.

NKF aims to always equip nurses with the knowledge and competences to respond effectively to the demands of patients with kidney failure. With that, NKF has invested in providing a wide range of facilities for the students of the PBHD Nursing Programme in order for them to get the most out of their learning experience. These facilities that support teaching-learning activities include a computer lab, a mock ward and skill lab, online nursing journals, additional renal-focused books for the library and an additional lecture hall fully equipped with audio visual equipment. NKF Training Centre has also completed a curriculum review which incorporates Core Sciences such as Basic Medical Sciences, Behavioural Sciences and Nursing Sciences.

NKF’s Certificate in PBHD has been specifically designed to meet the Nursing Board Malaysia’s criteria. With the accreditation, it further affirms the programme’s overall quality of education, training, and learning and assessment capabilities.
